Booked flights yesterday to LA in March. Trying to reserve seat (I know it costs, but it's important), but site will not let me. Phoned BA (expensive); was told that he could open the correct screen and see the seating plan. I can't. Have tried Chrome (my usual), IE (used this last time I booked with BA) and Firefox, but the same thing happens. I can highlight the passenger name but it will go no further. Any help would be much appreciated.

we had this problem with Ba in sept just gone, i'm 6ft 8 " and upgraded to have more leg room what a waste of money reserved seat out going to orlando was ok but coming back had different seats all together that is the 1st and last time with Ba. if we go back definitely going with virgin!!
Have you actually been able to get into 'Manage my booking' with your booking reference number?
youshould be able to click and drag an icon to the seat you want, is that what you get on your screen?

Yes Prudie, i can get into Manage my booking; it shows the correct flights and asks me to choose a seat. When I click on my name it just comes up with the number 1 next to it; just below that, the 'main deck' is checked. There is no seating diagram, though the man I spoke to said he could see it on his screen when he opened my booking ref. Perhaps I'm going to be the pilot?!
Have you clicked on a seat in the plan rather than your name (sorry it's difficult to try and help without seeing what you're seeing). If you finally got through to an adviser why didn't he offer to do it for you if you were having problems?

Have just tried again, andthe diagram is showing on Upper Deck. It's a different plane from the ones I've been in before, so maybe the layout is completely different too.
Question Author
He did, but I wanted to have a look at the diagram rather than book it 'blind',
That I understand, I'm really picky about my seat! Upper deck is first class isn't it, is that right?
You could also put the plane into google and get a seating plan if you know it eg 747 seating plan - not that you should have to. This is just an example link

You're joking...no, I'm Premium economy. I think I'm going to have to phone them again and get them to do it while I follow the diagram online - it's just timed out and I've lost everything I'd saved.
oh dear, tearing hair I guess :-)

The username was correct when I joined and still is.....Have been shouting at the screen as it timed out for a second time - think I've sussed it now and will try again tomorrow (if i still have any hair left by then). Thanks for your help and sympathy!
The reason it`s coming out as Upper Deck is because it`s an A380
Question Author
Is that the nasty new big one? As if I wasn't already nervous enough!
I don`t know what time in March you are travelling but airlines change their schedules in March (when the clocks change) and that is when they switch aircraft types, configurations etc. Maybe that is why you can`t choose your seat (although if the customer service agent couldn`t help then maybe there is some other issue). I would try again in the next few days.

It's the end of March, 237SJ. I did almost succeed a little earlier, but I'd taken so long in sorting it out that everything vanished, and apparently you have to leave it at least an hour before trying again. So, tomorrow it is, in a calmer frame of mind I hope (me, not BA).
I don`t know what you mean by username but anyway..
One flight is a 747 (World Traveller Plus will be on the main deck) and the other flight is an A380 so it will be upstairs. Go to manage bookings, enter your name and booking reference in the boxes. Go to choose seats (I think it`s on the upper right of the page). Click that and you will see the seat plan of your cabin. You should be pre-assigned a seat which will be grey (a little sitting person figure) Click on it (you don`t have to drag). Then see where you want to sit and click again. The little icon will move and highlight green (if I remember rightly). It might say something like confirm seat, save changes or something like that. Exit booking. There might be a video of the process on the internet somewhere.
Are you sure it's not a codeshare flight? ie a flight with a BA number but flown by some one else? You can't book seats on those.

Sorry 237SJ and Cathyhuns, I haven't checked back on this since Sunday. I succeeded after a night's sleep....I had gone through the process quite easily last time (over 2 years ago) and couldn't see why I couldn't get it to work this time; got in a bit of a tizzy and was timed out twice. Have now chosen two nice seats (one for each way, I don't need two at a time). Incidentally I am still terrified at the thought of the 388 and was relieved to find that the return flight is a nice little Jumbo!
The comment about username was a reply to Prudie who thought I must be living up to my tearing hair persona.
well done yuo. They've probably tweaked the process over two years.
