Most hotels are in Ferrengi Beach, although this is expanding into other resorts, but pretty much the same and all on the same north streach of the island. There are a few smaller resorts dotted about the island if you like it quieter (although Ferrengi is hardly loud) but you will need to book direct or chose a more select travel company. There are loads of fantsaic offers for holidays in Penang on the web. You can eat in the hotels all are quiet a good standard. There are also loads of little family run restaurants in Ferrengi Beach where you get asian food and drinks. Drink is quiet expensive and limited to restaurants (expect for hotels) and generally limited to bottled beer and a few spirits, although bottled guniess is popular with the locals! You can also head into Georgetown where there are also loads of international and asian restuarants and some fairly good shopping. If you are going to KL before or after buy your pressies, clothes etc in Chinatown as it is cheaper than Penang. Pick you month carefully it rains hard out of season. Enjoy!
