Shrewsbury

I'll be in Shrewsbury for a weekend in September, and am wondering if there are any nice restaurants (preferably with vegetarian food) that I could go to on my own?  Also, if there is anything really great to see there, as I will have only one day free. Thanks.

The two I'd put forward would be:

The Peach Tree (by the Abbey) and The Armoury (by the river). You'll be spoilt for choice though.

The Peach Tree is good but I'd avoid The Armoury for veggie food. Have had 2 or 3 ok but disappointing meals there.  Also Sol (quite upmarket) and Cromwells (bistro and restaurant in separate rooms) is also quite good.  There is a little art gallery called The Real Art Gallery near the station, which has a nice (licensed) cafe for the daytime, with good veggie things.

I wouldn't bother with any of the museums really, but Shrewsbury is a nice place (I wouldn't say 'really great'...) to wander around.  As well as the usual high street shops there are some interesting independent shops on Wyle Cop (a street-worth trekking down to the bottom) and in the Parade Shopping Centre (Victorian building, formerly a hospital).  Also the Bear Steps and Fish Street are nice to walk through.  There is an old market hall in The Square which is pretty.  Also there is a nice big park called the Quarry, with a garden within it called The Dingle - nice on a sunny day.

Thanks for that,H55, that's great.  I am staying in a B&B in Abbey Foregate and will be at a seminar on Sat and Sun just outside the town, so I am heading over on Friday to have a look around. I am flying into Birmingham.

Peach Tree would be your closest restaurant then. As you have probably guessed, the B&B is near the abbey, and also close to town.  Dont know if it's your sort of thing, but it is one of S'bury's few claims to fame - a popular series of books about a medieval monk called Cadfael are set in the abbey, and it was made into a TV series a few years ago (Derek Jacobi no less). 

You are not far from the cineworld cinema there either (there is also a nice little cinema in the old market hall in the Square) if you are at a loose end in the evenings.
