Whitby, York, Moors

Hi!

I need some help with Yorkshire. I'm on my way over there for a couple of days.

I was there for Le Tour - so I didn't see much of Yorkshire as Yorkshire. We're in Whitby and here's what I need help with:

1. Somewhere for Sunday Lunch. Just need a good pub, maybe in Robin Hood bay?

2. Anything we need to see in the moors particularly? We're going to Dalby for some mucking about in the mud. But is there, for example, some really old stones with a National Trust coffee shop nearby?

3. We're in York on the Saturday - anywhere we should park in particular that would save me a traffic jam in the evening?

4. Other good restaurants which I may not be aware of?

5. Personal experiences of anywhere in North Yorkshire which were good and worth sharing?

Zacs - another thought: tell them to keep an eye on Ebay in case the finder (a polite word for a thief who finds something that is not theirs to keep) tries to sell it.

AbbEd - sorry for digressing. BTW I am available for any further info/guided tours/local gossip etc in person...all for the price of a cuppa ;-)

Not a lot of people know this_ but if you happen to hold a blue disable badge a lot of the car parking in York is free!

As Jourdain2 say, don't even consider trying to park in central York. From Whitby, I'd use the Monks Cross Park & Ride:

If the weather's good (and you don't mind a longish drive from Whitby), Fountains Abbey (which is a World Heritage Site) is definitely worth a visit:

(You could combine it with a look around Harrogate, which is a very pleasant town)

2nd go - the site froze last time and put me onto technology - which I couldn't escape. There is so much in Yorkshire (it's big), but it sounds as if you want to be quite local to Whitby. Don't know how much time you have.

Pickering is always worth a visit, nice little place but don't overlook the church(many do) which has some of the earliest frescoes ever recorded in England. There is the starting station for the N. Yorks railway and bookshops and pubs and coffee houses and... and... On the way there are Grosmont and Goathland, of 'Heartbeat' fame.

The 'Lyke Wake' walk crosses the moor, but I don't know of stopping places. Below the Hole of Horcum there used to be a good pub, but it was closed 2 years ago. Rosedale is a gem of a drive.

If you are reasonable active and interested in heritage etc. I would suggest a day out driving to:-

1 Scarborough headland and visit the church with the grave of Anne Bronte and good views, castle also interesting (but probably no time to go round).
2 Flamborough Head, impressive chalk cliffs and bird sanctuary for a walk, followed by..
3 Lunch at a gastro-pub called something like 'Seabirds' on main street in Flamborough village - good helpings, good beer, good food - was there early Oct..
4 Drift down to Burton Agnes (A614 after Bridlington, heading back to Driffield) and visit the stately home there. Excellent art collection, very interesting house, lovely gardens, good tea-rooms (smashing, friendly local guides).
5 Head back cross-country through some of the renowned Wolds villages (just put an offer in on a house in one of them) - Kilham,Langtoft, Sledmere (Hockney paints this a lot) up to Malton.
6 Malton - lovely little market town, worth a stop to see where Dickens stayed and got the idea for 'A Christmas Carol', church in market square is lovely, worth a walk round, lots of individual shops, pubs for meals etc.. Depending on timing you are now about 10 mins. from Pickering and driving back across the moors.

I could do lots of other itineraries - if you like wine you might like to look up 'Ryedale Vineyards' (the most northerly vineyard in England) just south of Malton and see if they have a wine tour. I can personally vouch for the wines and they have been winning medals and awards galore this year.

The best thing about Yorkshire are the Fat Rascals. (Fruity little buns)

Have them with tea in York when you go, or in Helmsley, or anywhere come to that, just have them!

If it's a nice day look in at Thornton le Dale for a couple of hours, it's a nice village with tea rooms and restaurants. About three miles from Pickering on the edge of the North York Moors.

If you're going into York the best options are the park and rides, and they are plentiful.
Try parking at Monk's cross if you're coming in from Whitby.
There's a pretty good out of town shopping centre there too if you fancy a mooch on your way back.

We usually go to York by rail. if you book in advance and have a rail card you can get tickets at stupidly cheap prices and then get the road train £2 each way from the Rail Museum just down from the station,no fuss driving or parking just straight into time.
