Whitby, York, Moors

Hi!

I need some help with Yorkshire. I'm on my way over there for a couple of days.

I was there for Le Tour - so I didn't see much of Yorkshire as Yorkshire. We're in Whitby and here's what I need help with:

1. Somewhere for Sunday Lunch. Just need a good pub, maybe in Robin Hood bay?

2. Anything we need to see in the moors particularly? We're going to Dalby for some mucking about in the mud. But is there, for example, some really old stones with a National Trust coffee shop nearby?

3. We're in York on the Saturday - anywhere we should park in particular that would save me a traffic jam in the evening?

4. Other good restaurants which I may not be aware of?

5. Personal experiences of anywhere in North Yorkshire which were good and worth sharing?

The best pub for grub in Robin Hoods Bay is the Victoria Hotel (it is at the top of the steep bank leading down into the old village).

While you are on the moors I would recommend a trip to Ryedale Folk museum. It is situated in a lovely village called Hutton le Hole and it is a museum with a difference!

When you go to York, use the park and ride. Last time I had to park in the city centre near the university I think the nearest council car park was something like £5 an hour.

If you have time to go, the finest attraction in North Yorkshire is the Forbidden Corner. It is simply a fabulous day out. You have to book as they restric the numbers of people in there at any one time.

If you are in Whitby for lunch I would suggest either Rust to Shears on Silver Street or a cafe (the name escapes me even though I was there last week) in an alley at the side of a shop called Shepherds Purse on the cobbled part of Church Street.
For a pub lunch, The Duke of York also on church street (near the bottom of the 199 steps) is good. It has the added bonus of being Gness free, as she is barred

Possibly the best food I've eaten this year was at The Black Swan in Helmsley :

Helmsley is a very pleasant place for a wander around - lots of small 'individual' shops.

Re. York - Don't even try to drive in there - use one of the Park and Rides. From A64 turn R on A1237 (Thirk/Harrogate direction) - there is a P & R after about a mile. If you miss that one then use the one at Rawcliffe Bar (junction of A1237 and A19 (Thirsk road), it's actually easier to find than the first and the bus into York stops at the Railway Museum (free towncentre map available on the bus). I'll think about the rest and get back later - but seriously, don't drive into the city -especially at a weekend.

A friend of ours lost a valuable gold and tanzanite (blue/green gemstone) bracelet in Whitby recently. They've alerted the police station and all the jewellers and i know it's a very long shot, but if you hear anything of anyone finding it, please post on here.

Sorry to hijack your thread Ed. I can thoroughlt recomend a drive around the villages of Egton / Lealholme / Grosmont. The Board Inn at Lealholme does nice food

Catch North Yorks Moors train to Goathland. Walk from Goathland to Grosmont along Rail Trail, stopping at Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole (possibly smallest pub in England). Followed by cream tea in Grosmont and train back to Whitby. Or walk back across the moors as shown on this walk

It might be worth them putting an ad in the local paper (Whitby Gazette) offering a small reward for its return, just in case it was found by a local.
