How Can I Find Out How Many Rail Miles A Journey Is
9 Answers
Hi there I am trying to find out how many rail miles a journey is as oppose to working out the number of miles by road. I am planning on getting people to sponsor me for a journey from Perth to John O Groats to Lands End to London and back to Perth doing some by bus but most of it by train. I know at the big national rail timetable there used to be mileage details at the side but not really wanting to spend £20 on one unless I have to. I need an accurate figure for people to sponsor me 1p per mile or more.

(The publisher changed from HMSO to Middleton Press last year). It shouldn't cost you anything to do so because almost every large reference library (and even many local libraries) stock it.
Otherwise you might need to contact Network Rail to see if they can provide the information:

You might also find a friendly rail employee, who has access to the 'TRUST' system, which displays the distances of any rail journeys entered into it.

Why not register with a railway interest forum eg http:// www.rai lforums .co.uk/ and ask there?
You are well intentioned Gordie, but I'm not sure you have thought this through.
You have serious anxiety issues using public transport, you are on benefits and in a sizeable amount of debt so how will you finance this venture, why do you think people are going to sponsor you for sitting on a train in the warm and dry?

network rail host an electronic version of the all-lines rail timetable - go to
http:// www.net workrai l.co.uk /aspx/3 828.asp x
download the network map to work out which table numbers you need, then download the separate PDF version to look at the tables (although a bigger file, it's easier to navigate if you know the table numbers you want)
the mileages are still published in each table.
