Looking to go on Holiday late september early October, dont really want to travel to far 4 hours tops (prefably less than that ), Looking for somewhere to sunbathe with a nice town, have a 2 year old also so somewhere family orientated.
By late September early October the weather in most of Europe is beginning to cool down and can be a bit unsettled. Your best bet in my view would be the Canaries. Lanzarote is nice (Playa Blanca is my favourite town). It will be nice and warm there at that time, flight times from southern England are about 3.5 to 4 hours.
I've holidayed in Lanzarote a number of times SirO. I have to say that its reputation as a windy island (and neighbouring Fuerteventura's literal translation of its name) is a little over-egged.
Sure it's breezy from time to time. Most of this is in the form of "thermic winds" which are generated by the heating of the land during daytime. This is a common feature of many small-ish islands. In the evenings the wind subsides and it's usually very pleasant.
As a fellow sunbather anywhere in Spain except perhaps very South, Costa del Sol eg, would be very dodgy to rely on good weather getting into October. I've been more than once at that time of year so I know. You wouldn't want to go somewhere where it may be cloudy and cool every day.I agree with the Cyprus/Greece suggestions as they should still be quite warm or maybe the Canaries (but they are unreliable too IMO).
the Mediterranean heats up all summer; towards autumn the hot air starts to rise and suck in turbulence and storms. September should still be okay, October a bit more risky.
Menorca and Ibiza have still been warm in September when I've been there. I prefer Menorca.
Malta doesn't really have any beaches, and when I went about 15 years ago it was distinctly unfriendly to families. It might have changed by now, of course, but I wouldn't go there again.
