I have just heard that a nephew of mine has gone to Egypt for two weeks hols, but without telling anyone, including my brother. We have no idea where he is but it is unlikely that he is sightseeing at the Pyramids !

I thought the Red Sea resorts were out of bounds at present, so where else could he be ?

Cairo,Alexandria?
I hadn't heard that the Red Sea resorts are out of bounds. He could be at one of the resorts on the Gulf of Aqaba, up on the east coast of Sinai.
Hurghada?

"The areas to which the FCO advise against all but essential travel do not include the tourist areas along the Nile river (eg Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings) or the Red Sea Resorts of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada"

"As a precautionary measure, we are advising against all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el Sheikh. We are not raising the threat level in the resort. The above advice applies only to air travel to and from Sharm el Sheikh"

I've been to Cairo. It's a fascinating place but I'd steer well clear at the present time.

Maybe he got a cheap deal.
Abercrombie & Kent are offering a luxury Nile cruise for only £1500 pp.
Wherever he is I hope he's safe.

Eddie...unlikely I would have thought !

He is a strictly a lie down in the sun for two weeks and top up his skin cancer type of person !

Two years ago, he and his somewhat vacuous girlfriend went to Madeira but it was the 3rd day before she realised that she wasn't in the Canaries !
Chris, Hurghada is on the Red Sea.

Might be Hurghada I suppose. We shall know when he deems to reply to his emails.
Taba. East Sinai - but he could be at any of the resorts. They're not closed to tourists.
"Chris, Hurghada is on the Red Sea. "

Yeah, it already says that in his post....
if he hasn't told anyone how do you know it's Egypt ,is he young x

Seems a bit harsh on his girlfriend, especially if her parents know her whereabouts.
NoMercy, I know - but Mikey said Red Sea resorts are out of bounds at present.
They're not strictly out of bounds, I don't think. I'm pretty sure there are some very cheap deals around, but let's face it, who in their right minds would really want to go to somewhere like Egypt, Tunisia or even Turkey at present?

Talbot....as far as I know, they don't know either. I seem to recall that the same thing happened to Retro some time ago. I have my fingers crossed.

But I can't really understand why anybody would go to places like this now.
Its punishingly hot there....nearly 100 degrees and there are plenty of other places to go to, without putting yourself at risk.
I had what must be the cheapest stay in Cairo. I just turned up at the airport and asked for a price for 3 nights B&B at a cheap Hotel. I was told $10 which I thought was cheap! The room was just a cupboard with a bed and breakfast was an egg on 1/2 a slice of toast, but when I came to pay the bill it was $10 US for all 3 nights. They didn't want Egyptian currency only $ but I had $ notes so it was ok. This was 1988 by the way but still cheap.

No mercy...we crossed in the post !

I am reminded of that arrogant British tourist who resented being repatriated from Tunisia, and there was an armed Policeman in the background at the time !
NoMercy, //They're not strictly out of bounds, I don't think. //

Of course they're not. See my post at 07.51.
Mikey, //there was an armed Policeman in the background at the time !//

I think you'll find that policemen in these countries are armed all of the time.

Eddie....my late Mum had a wonderful holiday in Egypt, about 30 years ago, and went to the Pyramids, etc. She made it sound very enticing but I wouldn't go near the place these days. Tunisia was really nice as well, when we went in 1999, but again, sensibly out of bounds now.

I am not sure how places like Tunisia are managing these days. From what I could see, they depended 100% on tourism and now all those hotels must be empty. A pity as it was such a friendly country.

I will stick with Cornwall, for the foreseeable future ! Nice beer and pasties as well !
