Yes and definitely yes (in answer to the OP). OH had major operation and spent three weeks in a Portugal hospital - FOC because she was able to produce her EHIC. Son had treatment for a minor injury in same hospital but was chased for payment when back in the UK - because he had forgotten to renew.
Also many travel insurance companies insist that you still have one of them or they may not pay out. Sometimes you may be treated in an NHS type place so they would not have to pay out if you had used an EHIC card and insurance companies use anything to save having to pay.
