Yes had to use it once. Not sure what the economic climate has to do with it. While we are still in the EU it saves you a lot of money if you have to see a doctor when on holiday in Europe.

But we've left the Eu so what is the alternative?
We haven't left the EU yet and are unlikely to for a year or more. What gave you that idea?
They are free unless you go to one of those rip off sites. I can't see how the economic climate affects anything. Of course if you are not planning on going abroad within the EU it is worth getting one in case you need treatment
Question Author
I see...Which date will we have definitely left and what will be the next best alternative. I'm possibly travelling next Sep. Will it still be valid if i apply now?
Maybe by 2018/19 but even then there may be some reciprocal arrangments. Better to get one- costs nothing
You'll get at least 2 years notice about any changes to things like this
Question Author
Do you think i should apply today or nearer to the time of travel? I'm hazarding a guess it's better to do now before the rules change or prices are added.

Agree?
What have you got to lose. Apply now- one less thing to worry about. It'll still be valid in Sep 2017

Does anyone know of the free official website please?
Question Author
Found it i think?

https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do

Does that look kosher?
use gov.uk
Question Author
Fantastic. Thank you all.
The earliest we can possibly leave the EU is March / April 2019 , (2 years after A50 is instigated) . So the EHIC card is good for at least 2 years and 4 months, and probably a lot longer !.
Use this one, you don't have to register an account like the one you posted

https://www.gov.uk/european-health-insurance-card
http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/about-the-ehic.aspx
Yes yours looks okay. But I always go via gov.uk first and follow their links
