Before I go roaming the web I would welcome the insight and expertise of ABers.
Off for a jaunt to London in 4 weeks for a 3 night stay and it's eons since I've been. Could anyone recommended the best options for getting about i. e. Oyster card or similar?

As has been said, you simply need a contactless debit card in order to pay the lowest fares.
Forget apps. Services throughout central London all run every few minutes (with digital displays at bus stops, telling you when the next one will arrive), so you just need a good old-fashioned map to ensure that you're on the right route. You can pick one of these up at any Tube station:
