I was always told to pack a case, then unpack it, and re pack it but leave half of the stuff out. Repeat as necessary.

Works for me!

How much does the empty case weigh? Some are much heavier than you think so perhaps you need to buy a lighter one.

Good shout Gef still a bit unsure what to take the place we are going to is half board which requires dress shirt and trousers at mealtimes.

Don't pack any toiletries.

Once you are checked in and your case and hand luggage has been weighed, go straight through to the departure area. Then go to Boots and buy everything you need.

Amazing how much weight toiletries actually take up!.

Also restrict yourself with shoes.

If you're going with someone else,

  1. Make sure you're only taking e.g., one tube of toothpaste (or take scubadiver's sensible, yet slightly pricey advice! :-) )

  2. Distribute the heavy stuff between you

Lay everything out in outfits, and take a few "base" items and just different tops that go with most of the skirts/trousers. Only allow one or two items that don't go with almost everything else.

Check that the hotel provides a hairdryer etc, and don't take your own.

Go to www.bbc.co.uk/weather and see what it's going to be like. Therefore you won't end up packing for "all waethers just in case" because if it DOES suddenly change, you can always buy clothes out there!

Jan-bug- I agree, my idea isn't the cheapest, as airport branches of Boots usually are a few pence more expensive per item than High St locations. However, offset that by excess baggage charges and it doesn't look so bad!!
One good trousers two shirts. One shoes to match that. Two shorts several t shirts one sandals, one pair of trainers especially if you think you might walk alot or use gym.. One swim trunks. Few toiletrys. That is it. I assume the baggage allowance is the usual 20km. But that shouldnt come anywhere near it. You are a bloke you dont need much. 2 socks and undies.

Ok - and if taking brinjal's suggestions - some stergene too!

scubadiver - another way round it is to buy the "minis" that are now sold also in cheaper shops like Superdrug or Savers.

Mind you, I agree that one should make use ofthe plastic bag option, and if pushed to, enquire as to whether or not people buying two large bottles of spirits and a few bottles of perfume will be charged for that excess weight!? :-p

Was recently in Amsterdam for four nights. My suitcase contained: 2 pairs trousers, 1 pair sturdy shoes, 8 polo shirts, 2 pullovers, lots of sox and nix, 3 hardback books, usual gents toiletries, phone charger, iPod charger and a bulky fleece. Still only came to 15kg. Hand baggage was not weighed (I had a small rucksack) and I also had a carrier bag with "duty free" on the way back.
