On a Friday evening, the M1 can be busy and there are usually some sort of delays somewhere along the journey. I'd reckon on about 1 hour 15 minutes as a rough guide.
To get a quote for both the fare and the journey time, contact one of the two authorised taxi companies which operate from Luton Airport:
Alpha Taxis: 01582 595555
CABCO Taxis: 01582 736666
The way which most people usually take into central London is to take the free shuttle bus to Luton Airport Parkway station. The trains are fairly frequent and they won't be crowded, travelling southbound, on a Friday evening. The trains run to Kings Cross Thameslink as well as several other stations within central London.
The cheapest road route into London is the easyBus service which charges 8 walk-up fare but can cost as little as 2 if pre-booked online:

This service runs to Baker Street.
The alternative is the GreenLine coach. It's not usually necessary to pre-book but, if you wish to do so, go here:

This service runs to Victoria Coach station.

I recently travelled on my holidays & did most of the travelling from Luton Airport and London amongs other places. If you book online with National Express a week or so in advance, you can actually get a ticket for 1 Pound! I forget what its called but I got it at that price several times.
Friday night is one of the worst times to travel this route especially because any little accident on the M1 causes huge delays. I was delayed for 4 hours on one occasion on a Fri nite!
I also booked a Ryan Air ticket online from Luton to Dublin for 10 pence plus tax! At those prices, I couldnt believe that so many English havent even been to Ireland...which btw, is 1000 times nicer than England
