ive never had one as last time i went anywhere was when i was young enough to be on my parents! how do i get one, how long does it take and how much is it please?

You can pick up an application form at any Post Office. The Post Office also offer a service whereby you submit your form through them, rather than direct to the Identity & Passport Service. This has the advantage that you get your application checked for any errors at an early stage. The disadvantage is that there's a supplementary fee for this service.

Alternatively, you can download the application form from the IPS website. This site also has all of the answers to the questions which you've asked:

it might take a few weeks to get but on the back of the envelope is a space to write the date you are planning to travel. In this space write a date by which you would be happy to get your passport, for example in 15 or so days (don't try to put 'tomorrow' or anything too soon) and you should find it will arrive quite speedily.
