Air miles to expire

I have 45,000 American Airlines Air miles which expire after 3 years, which is coming up. Unless you have used the account. Does anyone know the best way to keep them - should I just stay in a cheap AA-linked hotel for a night so they will last for another 3 years? I have no plans to travel in the near future...
