Aeroplan Miles to use or transfer

I have an Air Canada Aeroplan Miles account which is due to expire soon. I would like to transfer the miles to something I can keep or use. I have looked online at the Aeroplan webiste and if I try to transfer to someone else the nominated person will have to pay about CAD1000. Is there anything I can do to either transfer to another programme for myself or donate to a nominated person without a ridiculous fee?
