How far is it from Cologne Airport to Soest? And are there public transport links which are easy to use?

Take a train from the airport to Kln city centre. (Either to the main station, shown as 'Hbf' on the timetable, or to Messe/Deutz station, depending on the information given in the timetable link below. Note that 'Hbf' would be easier, since it avoids a walk to get your connection). Journey time = about 12minutes.

From the central Kln station, take a train to Hamm. Journey time = roughly 1 to 1 hours.

From there, take a connection to Soest. Journey time = approx 15 minutes.

(There are a few, very rare trains directly from the airport to Hamm. Also, at certain times, different interchange points might be required).

Total journey times vary between about 2 hours and 2 hours 45 minutes.

Use the journey planner here:
http://www.bahn.co.uk/db_uk/view/index.shtml
Initially enter 'Cologne' as your starting point but then, on the next screen, place your cursor over 'Kln Hbf' and select 'CGN KlnBonn Airport' from the drop down menu which appears. When the times are displayed, click the arrowheads, on the left, to see the interchange points for each journey (or click the arrowhead alongside 'Show details for all').

Incidentally, Dsseldorf International airport is closer to Soest. There are some direct trains or you need just one change. FlyBe operate to Dsseldorf International from Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Southampton.

Depending what time of year you're travelling, Air Berlin fly to Lippstadt/Paderborn and it can be cheap. Lippstadt is about 15 km from Soest.
PS: easyJet fly from Luton to Dortmund, which is the closest airport to Soest.. (It's just a 25 minute bus journey to the central rail station, followed by a direct train, taking about 45 minutes).

I was checking my information while Cc1 was posting. I had a feeling that there was an airport in the Padeborn area but I couldn't remember the operator.

The Air Berlin flights, mentioned by Cc1, are from Stansted and Manchester.
