a word of caution, Trafalgar Square if good fun, but can be quite scary on New Years Eve, just take the min amount of money req, i.e. beware of pickpockets and dont flash your mobile phone either. Just be aware that not everyone there is kosher.Leicester Square at night is also buzzing with activity and lots of people, we had some Russian friends who thought Leicester Square at nights was wonderful, another place not to miss is Convent Garden which is within walking distance of Trafalgar Square.
Dee Sa is right about being cautious, but then all over london you should be vigilant, but I think seeing it out of your hotel room is a waste, you might as well watch it on TV @ home.
I saw in the millenium at the foot of big ben, the crowds were unbelevable and the atmosphere was electric and incredibly friendly. I have also seen in the new year in trafalgar square, never seen any trouble, except drunken people trying to kiss and hug you.
Have a fantastic night whatever you do BusyBee!!
