Newcastle, Quayside

Am going to newcastle for the weekend, staying right on the quayside and was wondering if there was anything particular I should do or see? I'm not wanting anything too touristy or far away from the quayside but as I do not know the area - would appreciate a few hints or tips. Are you able to walk around and stop at a cafe, do some shopping etc? Are there any must-see places? Any answer appreciated. Thanks
