Can anyone give me a definitive answer, plus reference source to prove it, to the question "Which is the longest and deepest gorge in Europe?"

Many sources give different answers - help!

gives two possibilities for the deepest, whilst its Wikipedia artice states that the Gorge du Verdon is the 2nd largest in the world (without defining 'large') also see the general Wikipedia article on Gorges (actually redirects to Canyons).
