I am going to Sunny Beach for a week next month but don't want to spend all day by the pool - even if the temp will be mid 30's. Anyone got any recommendations for day or 1/2 day trips away from the masses.

Some of the excursions here look interesting. (It might be possible to do some of them yourself, without using the tour company, if you really want to avoid the crowds):

It is more than 30 years since I was in Bulgaria so I'm sure it has changed a lot. The overnight trip to Sofia (the Capital of Bulgaria) & the Rila Monastery was very good & you see some lovely scenery also. I see from Chris's link that they have an overnight trip to Istanbul also for only 53. This is my favourite city in the whole world.
Hi - my friend and I just returned from Pomorie where we spent a week. We didn't think that much to Pomorie, but Nessbar we found to be much more to our liking. You can take a bus for a very small amount or a boat over to Nessebar. The only other place we visited, apart from Sunny Beach, was Bourgas which wasn't far either, but we didn't find an awful lot to do there. Its very good for shopping but that's about it. Hope this helps.
