What is the best type of rail ticket to get from Southampton to London? There seem to be so many and I'm sure you used to be able to get discounted trips at the weekend? The only ones I've found cost 60 quid for two people!!! Any ideas of fare savers from any websites please?? Many thanks

do your travel plans match the timetable shown at http://www.megatrain.com/uk/timetables/southam pton_london_all.php
??
It would help if you said whether you were going for the day or a longer trip and what you've already tried.

I can't actually find anything (barring megatrain) at 60 for a period return for two so if you've found that you must be doing something right.

I've read (but haven't checked it out) that you can make a saving be rebooking at Basingstoke if your train stops there - worth a look.

This map shows which stations you can book Apex and Super Advance fares, with South West Trains, from:

You'll see that Southampton isn't included but Brockenhurst and Bournemouth are. As far as I can see (from looking through a few timetables), all trains to London, from these stations, call at Southampton Central. Which means that you can book in advance, taking advantage of the cheaper fares from those stations, and then board at Southampton. (Fares are the same from either Bournemouth or Brockenhurst). For example, travelling out early on Saturday 14 July and returning late on Sunday 15 July is currently priced at 18.30 per person, return.

Wow thank you everyone that's great! Sorry dzug - didn't make too clear did I! I am travelling on a Sat morning returning on the Sunday, next day. Times are not really relevant as quite flexible. I've really only looked at south west trains and something called trainline. Will look at megatrain and sus this faresaver from other stations thou!! Many thanks for your time everyone.
Alas Chris's suggestion won't work. For SW trains APEX tickets:

You may not start or finish your journey at any station other than those stated when you buy your ticket

So you'd have to trundle out to Brockenhurst first
