How long are you going for? It also depend what you're planning on doing whilst there...you should be able to get tourist information (travel guides or from the place you booked the holiday) which gives you ideas on how much meals cost etc.
How long to do you intend to stay for.I would say 1000 is enough for self catering easily for a fortnight if its just for food and drink (booze included) and too much for a week but as I said you dont mention the length of your stay.
sorry guys going for a week ,kids are 5 , 8, 13 in costa teguise going to do a trip or two ,but people say dont book thru the rep go to the hotel reception
you should be able to have a lovely week for that and enough to buy souvenirs etc! I agree with what you have been told about not booking through your rep.If you go to reception or just down to the local town you will find ots of places offering the same deals for a lot cheaper! Have a good time, it is a lovely island from what I remember :) Take a trip to fire mountain (think that's what it's called) and to ride on the camels :)
My wife and I went toi Costa Teguise last year - the El Trebol Apartments. You'll love it!
Lanzarote is pleasantly cheap and 1000 pounds is more than enough money for food and drink for two weeks - provided you don't go over the top of course. The Fire Mountains in Timanfaya Park are superb, although they do get busy in the summer (we went in January when it was warm, very quiet and ideal). Don't book the trips through the rep though. We had a hire car and we noticed that just two of the organised coach trips would have cost the two of us as much as our hire car cost for the whole week! The coach trips are just another way for the holiday company to make money from you. Thompsons actually stopped their coach at some bed factory they have an agreement with where passengers were subjected to a sales pitch I recall! There are several local tour companies who are very reasonably priced.
One place that you and the family will love is the Guinate Tropical Park in the north of the island. Its a lovely zoo where you can spend a a day and they have a super parrot show. The Famara Cliffs at the north tip of the island are quite breathtaking as are the the caves at Cueva de los Verdes and Jameo del Agua.
even cheaper than the hotel will be some of the local money exchanges / excursion shops .
in tenerife at the moment they are paying 1.45 euros to the pound , thats 145 euros for 100 pounds with absolutely no commisiion.
no need for travellers cheques .
and the trips will be same as the reps but at least 20 to 25% cheaper if you shop around.
give the welcome / rip offf meeting a miss too.
a chance for reps to line their pockest and rip you off.
A visit to the Fire Mountain is a must, but as others have said DON'T let your rep con you into booking through them. The local companies offer FAR BETTER deals.
One word of warning, however, the road up to the fire mountain is very narrow and windy, and the coaches that take you up there are very big and wide!!!
