Its an interesting question you ask. As I think of all the cities Ive been to though, when I think of romanticism and tender images, I think of standing on the ferry between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The same would apply from the Kowloon side when I sit in my room, in silence, watching the stunning light displays on the island, interrupted by the juxtaposition of super ocean liners entering the harbour, beside a traditional Chinese junk.
Or even holding hands as our flat-boat drifts away from Jumbo, the restaurant, shrinking into the night.
Lovely imagery you conjured up for me! Thank you!

Shanghai is one of the most incredible cities I've ever visited. The skyline is fantastic and all the buildings come to life at night, every one is lit in a different way and several have images projecting from them.
Equally, Hong Kong harbour at night is a sight not to be missed. They hold a 'symphony of light' show every evening, where the skyscrapers light up and project laser beams into the sky, all to music. Once a week they also have fireworks.
For a (slightly) quieter time, go to Hangzhou, the West lake and park is glorious.
Enjoy
