Carriers face heavy fines if they convey passengers without the relevant documentation to enable them to enter their destination country, so it's extremely unlikely that any airline or ferry company would allow your son to travel without a valid passport (which, until such time as we get national identity cards, is the only acceptable proof of identity for travel outside of the UK and Ireland).

If your son's travel arrangements aren't until late in the day, he might be able to get his passport renewed if he can get to a passport office (and then to the airport or ferry terminal) in time. It's essential to have an appointment but the Passport Advice Line operates a 24 hour service (0870 521 0410) so they might be able to find a vacant slot for him tomorrow. Chris
I once woke up on a Saturday morning and realised my passprt had run out, and I was flying to Canada that afternoon at 3pm.

I drove from Birmingham down to the Passport office in London, got my new passprt in about 3 hours, then drove to Heathrow and got my plane.

So it can be done, but without a valid passprt he will not be able to fly.

cheers folks ive just come off the emergency hotline to the passport office and for a PREMIER appointment in newport, wales at 8.00am in the morning it costs 114. and guess who has to drive him there from south devon. his flight from exeter is 1pm and if they dont hurry his application through he's forked.

ah well wish us look ill keep you informed

cheers
Thanks for the reply. I hope he makes it. (The flight isn't until 1420. Latest check-in is 1320 with checked baggage or 1335 with hand baggage only). Personally, I think I'd have forked out the 90 fare for the 1405 easyJet flight ex Bristol, which is a lot nearer to Newport than Exeter is ;-)

Chris

get in- we done it -140 for his troubles though plus 30 for my petrol. he's twenty year old working full time [2 jobs] he pays up to twenty quid for a pair of grunty's and due to the fact that he has to give his mother 30 quid housekeeping and he only had spending money on him for his holiday could i pay and he will pay me back over the next few weeks.
i was up at 4am and in newport with him by 6.45 freezing cold standing out side macdonalds and he sprung the good news.
whats more we had to empty our pockets in the passport office and go through the x-ray machine and the big lad has got himself a pocketful of condoms. good lad you might say , sensible thing to do . i couldnt resist the lecture tho . amsterdam girls eh
your a mum in a million, give yourself a big pat on the back, he will dine out on the condom story for years to come -- on the "ever had an embarassing moment then ?"--- but dont Amsterdam girls want paying ?
