Travelling to Thailand!

I'm an enthusiastic but inexperienced traveller planning a 2 week trip to Thailand. After deducting the transport costs, I realised I only have about 400++USD left to spend. So I was hoping to get some sound advice on what to do and what to spend that money on in Thailand. I don't fancy luxurious hotels though so just the backpackers' lodges would do. :)
