best route

we're travelling to scarborough tomorrow from bathgate, west lothian (in between Edinburgh & Glasgow) and want to take the best route. Some recommend the A1 whilst others recommend the M74, any ideas?

The M74 might be a faster road but it seems to be taking you an excessive distance out of your way.

Assuming you want to stay close to the east coast, rather than the west, I doubt that using the A1 gives you much benefit over taking the most direct route, along the A68. (That's the way I'd go. It's also the route recommended by the AA routefinder:

Agree with Chris. Take the A720 S of Edinburgh and go down the A68 (toward Dalkieth), over the border at Carter Bar (stop if you haven't seen the view before), down to the A69 at Corbridge and then towards Newcastle. Come up the steep hill on the A1 past the Angel of the North, then follow the signs for the A19(come off the A1 just before the A1(M) on the A1231.Turn right onto the A19 and follow this down to Middlesborough. Then follow A171 signs for Whitby and Scarboro' over the North York Moors. I would guess it will take you about 4 to 5 hours without pushing it.
