cash or cheques

we are going to florida soon im told to take mostly travellers cheques is this correct and will i be able to use them everywhere thanks

Yes you won't have any problem in Florida. We always took travellers cheques as they offer more protection if they are stolen and found they were accepted everywhere (shops, restaurants, theme parks etc) the same as cash

Sometimes they will ask for your passport and sometimes they won't, so you might as well bring it anyway just in case

Floraida doesn't like cash - prefers cheques or Credit cards.

Just hand over your T/Cs in Florida [ must show photo ID - driving licenece with photo is fine or passport] and they will accept and give you the change in dollars, take a few dollars for arrival for taxis tips etc.

There is a new thing now, a kind of debit card you can take, which works the same way as t/c's.
American express did it last year, this year you can get it from Thomas Cook.
You just pay over some money into an "account" and get given a card that you can use most places and if not all atm's in florida can give you dollars from it.
We found it easier than t/c's as you had it on you all the time, and didn't have to worry about not taking enough money out with you.
But whatever you decide do take some dollars as well, for tipping ect.

If you have a Nationwide FlexAccount debit card, or Nationwide credit card - use that.

Better exchange rate and absolutely no charges.

the post office offer a credit card with no foreign exchange fees, meaning you get a much better exchange rate. for example, I bought my $ notes for $1.94, but got $2 to the � when using the Credit Card.
I found it easier to leave some cash at home, pay for all our meals, park tickets etc with the card (getting the better exchange rate) then simply paid the credit card bill off with the cash I left behind when I got home.
The PO also offer a Money Card, which is free to get, but you have to load at least �50 worth of $ onto it.

Bear in mind that most travel insurance policies only cover you for �250 worth of cash in you have a claim, so cheques/cards are a better option.
