My daughter's flight to Sri Lanka stops at Bangkok for 12 hours. Will she need a Visa if she leaves the airport at Bangkok for a few hours and comes back for her connecting flight to Sri Lanka?

No you do not need a visa for Thailand unless you plan to stay for more than 3 months.
I had a 4 and a half hour stop over in Helsinki this summer and because our bags were checked through to our destination we were not to leave the terminal. They very cleverly landed us at the same terminal as we were to depart from, so there wasn't anywhere else to go.
You will get a visa stamp in your passport in Thailand.
It will last for 1 Month, after that you will be fined for everyday you go over this date, but not more than 3 months.

Nothing serious, just a fine of about Baht 100 per day.
