lost/stolen passport

I wonder if anybody knows what a thief could do with a stolen/lost pass port which is out of date? My son took his passport to a night club to prove his age and lost it. It was found by a farmer in a muddy field several weeks later! Thankyou.

He could change the name photograph and expiry date and pass it off as a current passport

Apply for a new one using the details ?
If it was me I would notify the police and the passport office, just in case this happened, but it does sound as though the thief just tossed it aside probably from a car whilst leaving the venue.
