can anyone recomend an 8-10 day coach tour of south island taking in christchurch

can't recommend any tours but you must find time to go Whale Watching at Kaikoura. Not only is it an amazing experience it's all locally run & most of the profits go the local community (schools, etc). http://www.whalewatch.co.nz/

I'd forgotten about the Flying Kiwi. It's aimed more at young backpackers & looking at their website they seem to be even more outdoor orientated than I remember. Could be good if you're the young backpacking outdoor type! http://www.flyingkiwi.com/
