I went to Venice about 3 years ago and because it is a very religous there are no bars or pubs.  Although there is a Casino on an over the river.

Most of the young locals hang out in an area called Santa Maria - can't remember which area of Venice it is and don't know if there is actually live music.  There are plenty of eating/drinking places tho. Great restaurant near the Rialto bridge called something like trattoria madonna (tucked away down a side alley). Have fun!
