Norton Back Up

Further to a question from yesterday.
My father in law has Norton 360 which wasn't backing up which I have sorted.
It was trying to back up to Recovery (D:) which I have copied and pasted to other places and then deleted files in this file/folder but it continues to say
772 MB free of 21.2 GB. There are no files or folders in this site so what do I need to do?

On the same theme; when I bought my current laptop last year it came with McAfee. I didn't ask for it but I made the mistake of buying from PC World and was conned into it. Anyway, it has now expired and they are becoming a right pain. Every time I log on I get a pop-up asking me to renew my subscription; this happens two or three times a session. The last pop-up I got was from Microsoft telling me that Windows Defender had been installed as McAfee had expired, and would be uninstalled as soon as I renewed my subscription to McAfee, which I have no intention of doing. Am I OK just to keep on with Windows defender?

So how I see it Recovery (D:) has hidden files that I could see if clever enough but unfortunately not. Can I just format this file?
Not really important as I will teach him to back up another way.

1. Uninstall McAfee SecurityCenter.
2. Download, install and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool.

3. Restart your computer.
4. Download and install a decent anti-virus program (which many people would suggest excludes anything from Microsoft!). I suggest Avast:

I'm not sure exactly which files Norton backs up. You can view the hidden files by following the (easy) instructions in my link above. If you format your (virtual) D drive you'll obviously wipe all of the backed-up files but it's possible that there are also some Norton system files in there as well, so I'd advise extreme caution in doing so.

Thank you, my little Chicodee. Steps 1 to 3 completed successfully. I shall leave step 4 till tomorrow as I have been too near the juniper bush tonight to avoid making any mistakes.
