If the key is the career change, then I would suggest you decide what type of job you are aiming for before making the move. Try www.learndirect.com for careers suggestions, there's quite a good little questionnaire bit on there with how to get into new careers, training etc. London is a big expensive city if you don't know anybody and don't have a job, or even a focus of what kind of job you're looking for (here I assume you have friends/family in Newcastle).
Good luck finding what you're looking for.
Don't let the cost put you off if it's what you really want to do - but equally, there are lots of other great places in the UK (or abroad) if you don't have commitments to hold you in one place. Personally, I would decide what kind of job/career you want for the future, and then pursue opportunities to do that, wherever that takes you - then you know how much money you'll be earning and whether you can afford rent etc.
Good luck - big wide world of opportunity out there, go grab it!
