sydney, glasgow, london - all these places would be correct.
Yes but i would say Sydney first. One could call Kings Cross "The Cross" but what about Brent Cross? I lived in Sydney for six montsh (ah bliss) and everyone called Kings Cross "The Cross".

My home town (about 20 miles from Glasgow) has "the cross" at it's centre. It's a very common expression for many places. It simply means where an important crossroads were. Over the centuries settlements grew around the crossroads and developed into towns and cities. So my answer to your question would be probably most places.
