Pc Problem With Logging Out

Have had windows 10 for several months with no problems. Recently have not been able to log out or access programmes as windows icon in bottom left corner will not respond when I click on it. Have been turning computer off just using on/off switch which I know is not a good idea. Laptop is approx 3 years old. Any help appreciated. Mainly use Google chrome.

Also, when minimising a page, it close it down altogether. Time for a new laptop or can it be fixed?

Thank you gangesboy. Will give that a try. If you don't hear from me for a while it's probably because it didn't work!

After following gangesboy's link, the scan came up with the result '...did not find any integrity problems' which is reassuring in one way but hasn't solved the problem! Am now shutting down using the Alt/F4 keys.

try right click on windows icon bottom left brings up shutdown there.
