Really? Must've been a while ago, because he was Getafix when I was at school, and I'm 32 now. You learn something every day :)

Just did a brief check to find out when the name was changed. In the original French his name is Panoramix. It's only in the English version that he's called Getafix, so it all depends which version of the books you read, neilred24

As with most of the names in Asterix they are a play on words. Getafix was lost on me when I was child, but if you think about it, it would mean nothing to a french speaker. Most of the others are based on Latin/Greek based words so are a little more international.

My favourite names were 2 legionairres on sentry duty in 'Asterix in Britain'; Sendervictorious and Happyandglorious!
