Selling A Reg Plate

Hi, I bought my bike about 2 years ago and unfortunately it has come to the end of its life and is now being broken for spares, when I bought it the previous owner told me he had the bikes reg on a site where it could be bought if somebody wanted the reg. (It ends in CAM.) I forgot to ask the name o the site but wondering if anyone has done this before. As far as I am aware it was never originally a cherished plate, I think it's just a standard reg that was given to the bike when it was first registered. (I may be wrong) have just got a valuation from a site of £1500 which seems too good to be true! Is there a company that will just give cash value for the reg or is it even possible to sell the reg of it wasn't originally a cherished plate. Any info/help would be appreciated, it's either sell the plate or register it scrapped and the plate go into oblivion. Seems a shame to waste a plate when somebody may want it. TIA

You need t0 put the number plate on 'Retention' it costs £80.
Once it is on retention you can keep it, transfer it to use on another car or sell it. Details here.

Ah okay, that makes sense thanks. Do you know, when it's on retention, can't be sold or does it have to be kept in my name?

Then you'll be free to make it available for sale via any of the websites which claim to be able to find you a buyer. However, unless there's something particularly unusual about the number, you'll probably simply have wasted your eighty quid.

Brill thanks for both answers, I'll wait to hear back from the company I've emailed to see if they'd offer cash value. If not, don't suppose there's much point keeping it then.

Never done it, but I think you can scrap or sell the vehicle but you get a certificate saying you own the registration number, so you can sell or use to put it on another vehicle. If someone buys a vehicle hat has had it's original plate put on retention, the buyer has to apply for a new registration number. But if you are just scrapping it that does not matter , you do not need a registration plate to scrap a vehicle.

benny ,what they quote on the adverts is their selling price, the buying in price will be MUCH lower. Once you have the retention certificate you can advertise the number plate for sale yourself.
See what they offer and then price the plate for private sale at twice what they offer. That way buyer and seller get a good price by cutting out the middle man.

I've bought number plates and sold them -its a pretty easy process but I've always used a dealer -get the retention certificate then get a few quotes. You may be pleasantly surprised at the value - maybe of no value to you but a biker with a nick name 'cam' or initials?

Read EDDIE51's first link to make you sure you comply. Would not brake it just yet if you want to sell but certainly get your bike Sorn. When I sold a plate many years ago the company selling Reg No acted as agent and I got money when plate was sold with a % for their trouble going to the selling company

Anyone know why vehicle needs to be available for inspection, not a problem as it is, although in few pieces, just curious?

^^ It has to be the actual vehicle that was originally registered to that number plate. People have been known to bung a few bits of scrap together and claim it was the actual vehicle so as to get the retention certificate.

Ah I see so it doesn't matter too much then that the bike is currently without an engine, it's there just on the floor next to it, it's not roadworthy anymore and has no mot, and wouldn't pass one.

Best talk to someone in reg No selling game for advice they will be able to tell you exact process and whether it's viable
