How can you say that you have assault weapons bans (at least nationwide)? The Assault Weapons ban expired over ten years ago and has not been renewed. How can you say that background checks are required (nationwide)? Again, no such (thorough) checks appear to exist except in a few states in a few cases. Ditto gun licensing.

Who is misleading whom here, Clanad? Gun politics in the US is a mess, partly because of the state v. federal system, and pretending it is coherent, ideal and matching the standards we're requiring is grossly dishonest.

That's one of those statements where you can see where he's coming from and yet at the same time see that it's nonsense
Or is there a critical mass of gun ownership which causes the total to flip to zero ...

As an American living in the UK,all I can say is that I feel safer here than I would in any american state where gun ownership is common and dare I say expected. A few months ago, I mentioned in an email to my brother( lives about 35 miles outside NYC) that my daughter and I will probably return to the States as that is where she wants to establish her career. He immediately cautioned me,and said to be *very careful* about where we might choose to settle...this based on rampant gun usage and ownership. Not every citizen feels gun ownership is necessary or responsible.

Well, jim360, perhaps if you had your ducks in a row you'd understand the full meaning of the term 'assault weapon' as seen here: The term assault weapon is also commonly used to refer to some military weapons and weapon systems. The similar but technical term assault rifle refers to military rifles capable of selective fire - automatic (full-auto), semi-automatic, and burst fire. Automatic firearms (like machine guns) and assault rifles in automatic mode, shoot multiple rounds with a single trigger pull. Such firearms are Title II weapons regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986. Neither the ban nor its expiration changed the legal status of automatic firearms.

In other words, fully automatic weapons have been outlawed for decades.

Don't know where you're getting your info, but it's simply inaccurate.

As the article concerning background checks states, there are concerns about expanding the law simply because it contains provisions for recording names and addresses of gun purchases thereby giving the Government the power to track down owners… not a good thing.

The gun purchaser background check is required in every State since its a National Government requirement.
