should commerce be allowed to be stifled by what is essentially religious dogma? if yes, should restricted hours be extended to accommodate the sabbaths and prayer days of other religions?

Scotland has had unrestricted Sunday shopping for years...has not caused any uproar or decline in the moral fibre of the population...

MM, there was uproar in scotland in 2002 though, when Argos sacked 11 staff for refusing to work on a sunday.

Why is this argument always about shop workers?
Restaurant, bar workers, taxi drivers, theme park workers, Zoo employees, those workers in the arcade at the seaside, bowling alley workers, leisure centre workers etc, etc, etc should all have more time off too .

That way we could have some 'shared time and activities' as a family unit

I managed before Sunday opening and though I have shopped on Sunays since it hasn't been often.

I don't mind when they open as long as everything is fair and equitable to their staff.

Re Churches opening hours, they were 24/7 in my childhood, sadly not anymore for many various reasons.

I worked as a sports club bar manager for years and greatly enjoyed having mid week days off when everyone else was busy working.

My solution is to extend saturday by 23 hours and shorten sunday to 1 hour.
