Soul destroying - maybe in the beginning but in the end who should be ashamed? Me for my greed or them for their lack of human understanding?

Helen....you have lymphoedema as well as obesity and although i am no expert, you would fare better with a bypass than a band.
The above link may help with reputable clinics and i am sure that Las Vegas has good surgical managements.....;-)

I wish you well but can't really give you advise your looking for. I'd consider Poland or Belgium, neither not too far away.
Do you mind telling us your BMI? If it is 40 or above you should be entitled to the surgery on the NHS. If it's 35 or above and have other medical issues you should be entitled to it. This assumes you have tried traditional weight loss methods.

The NHS may also fund the operation abroad:

islay,
use these people www.forerunnershealthcare.com i used them 6 years ago. i got a gastric sleeve op in mumbai india, doctors there are best in the world. i paid £5000 for it then but i think they are charging only £4000 now for same op.
i was depressed with my wieght back then and now if i was not drinking beer i would be like a stick insect, beer is the only thing keeps me from getting too skinny, im sitting at around 80kg now as before i was 117 kg.
i will never look back and advise anyone to get the op.
PS. shop around for surgeons in india as you may get cheaper.
