I have to hope that Turkey goes on and on getting less and less democratic, and then the EU can refuse to let them in. So he is playing into the hands of those who don't want Turkey's application to succeed. It is a dangerous game for all concerned, not least for Turkey's minorities and women.

The EU is hardly democratic these days, it simply pays lip service to it.
Another indication that under no circumstances should Turkey be admitted
to the EU - and another pressing reason to leave before it happens through political expediency.
