If you want to go by bus, check out Greyhound (bus co)
I caught the Greyhound from LA to S.Fran and would not recommend it to my worse enemies....it was disgusting and took about 10 hours....The editor is also correct it aint that cheap.
The last 3 times I have made the journey I have flown and have never paid more than 50 bucks. It's cheaper still if you fly from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Oakland. They are both a little bit further out than LAX and S.Fran Int'l.
When you arrive at whichever airport make sure you have booked online at www.supershuttle.com .I think I paid about 8 bucks last year to get from the airport to Fishermans Wharf and about 10 bucks to get me to Oakland. You do have to share with other people but its a lot cheaper than cabs.
