It took me a long time to realise why 'mer'cans feel the need to add the qualifier to "London, England". My atlas lists one in Canada, one in Kentucky, one in Ohio (doubtless some settlements too small to be of note) and any of northern Irish descent may still insist on the London, rather than Derry, for their one.
It is, faintly, insulting for them to do that but I think it is habitual and necessary for them to say the town name, state name to avoid ambiguity, with so many repetitions of place names, stemming (largely) from Europe.
An American who shows interest in world affairs which do not impact their country, in any way, are a rarity to be treasured.
