Removing a toolbar.
51 Answers
I have downloaded mystart.incredibar.com (accidentally) and I want to remove it.
I've been onto Add/Remove Programs in the control panel I and can't see it there, but it keeps appearing every time I switch the computer on and I don't seem to be able to delete it.
Please could anyone advise me how to get rid of it? Thanks in advance.
PS: I am using Windows XP and Google Chrome (don't know if that's relevant as my knowledge of computing is very basic).

It hides itself in add remove programs as something called web assist (or similar) remove that if you have it.
It may have replaced your default search in chrome too. in which case select the 3 lines in the top right of chrome and select settings, then under search make sure you have google selected as the search engine.
Also a full scan with malwarebytes is a good idea, as above says do it in safe mode with networking, but you'll need to connect to your router with a Ethernet cable because XP doesn't support wireless in safemode with networking, only cabled connections.

Thanks very much Chuck and everyone, much appreciated.
I ran a full scan but not in safe mode as I don’t know how to get safe mode, I also don’t know how to connect the router with an Ethernet cable or if I have such a cable, as in the beginning I got an engineer to come to my house and set everything up for me.
I’ve tried all suggestions except the full scan in safe mode. The toolbar still won’t go and the computer keeps turning itself off. When I turn it back on I get the following message: ‘Microsoft Windows, the system has recovered from a serious error’.
Last night the computer was saying I was not connected to the internet, but I definitely was. Today that seems to have sorted itself out.
I’ve just spoken to the computer repair shop and I would like your opinion please, on what the chap had to say.
He hasn’t actually heard of mystart incredibar but said that none of the free-to-download programs will get rid of this sort of thing once a computer has been infected. Said I need my computer wiping clean and reloading, and then McAfee installed, which he will sell to me at the internet price. I can’t remember what he quoted for the McAfee but he said he will wipe and reload the computer for a discounted fee of £35, if I buy the McAfee.
He has worried me because he said the hackers will now have access to my internet banking as well as everything else on my computer, and that these people don’t go out burgling houses anymore, they steal your money online instead. He said that the threat of this happening will never go away, now that I have been infiltrated with a virus.
My laptop is at least 7 years old – is this a good age in laptop years? Could it be coming to the end of its natural life, and should I just bite the bullet and buy a new laptop?
Also, is there any way I can check how old my laptop is, without trying to find a receipt? (I know I won’t have the receipt after all these years).
Any opinion/advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Thanks LIK, I see where you're coming from.
He said there are hundreds of these things being sent out to screw your computer up and the hackers keep changing them.
What a horrible thought, there are some truly nasty people about.
He said that what you can dowload for free is "just a taster" and not the full program. I think you're right - if he sells that sort of thing he won't want you to get it for free.

Just an update if anyone's interested.
OH suggested I try deleting Google Chrome and download Firefox, which I have, and so far it seems to be going okay(ish). I've lost my bookmarks and I keep getting a message saying some plugins are out of date. I click to update but still get the message. Don't understand what all that is about but at least I am up and running, and the machine's not switching itself off, which is great.
Thanks again for everyone's help. x
