What does 'Kata ton daimona' (on Jim's gravestone in the Pere-Lachaise cemetery, Paris) mean? Is it a quotation? If so, where from?

'Kata ton daimona (eautou)' seems to mean: "He did his own thing". Click http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/2001-Ju

for information. Seems pretty fitting as an epitaph for him!
