just wondering what other people do with their salt usage

Hi Abers

i season all of my cooking to taste but don't add salt if i'm boiling vegetables.
we have salt and pepper on the table but i tend to use just the pepper and the other JD's may or may not use it. we use a lot of herbs too.

i'm wondering if you add salt to your cooking, miss it out altogether or each person adds accordingly.

i avoid ready meals as much as i can since i find them quite salty but i'm more wondering about your general use

Aa friend of mine, living in Brittany, with lady who adds salt, who grew up in a family which ladled salt into everything, nearly died last year from liver-failure - he was lucky enough to get a transplant. Salt and alcohol are forbidden

Yes, he drank a bit, but it wasn't the alcohol that caused it - it was the salt. One evening he went out and ate a cheeseburger in a restaurant was critically ill in hospital an hour or two later. When he visits me there is NO way I would risk his life and I'm glad I never salt most things, so it is no problem. I do need a few grains of salt on a boiled egg and tomatoes.
Salt and vinegar on fish and chips is compulsory I think, if not compulsory, it should be!! ;-)
Yes, I agree Ratter!
On the contrary factually perfectly correct. Otherwise one couldn't claim flavour is a combination of taste and smell. Personally I suspect a disagreement on the definition of flavour.

"Taste is 100% taste not smell”

Factually innacurate
Continually stating it's false won't make it so.
I hardly ever cook with salt as I eat a lot of highly spiced food so I don`t need it. I do use it if I make soup or a casserole but not when boiling veg - I can`t see the point of that. Each to their own though.

DTC umami is found i believe in MSG which had such bad press but i do use it from time to time and there's a considerable difference in taste (for the better).
Its been mentioned salt & vinegar on chips as well as mayonaisse but i prefer salad cream or gravy on chips.
old geezer, when i have a cold & bunged up nose i can't smell or taste anything and thats if i'm in the mood to even eat something!
i use a crumbled chicken stock cube, pepper and olive oil as a rub on chicken with herbs to flavour which is nice.

i think i might try cutting out salt in certain things and see how i get on
Mayonnaise is the Devil's vomit and should be banned.
A certain amount of salt is necessary in our diet. What we add should depend on the kind of diet. I don't eat any or very little processed foods, so I will use some salt in cooking...usually Malden sea salt. I also use Marigold instant boullion which has a salt base. I rarely add salt to cooked food, and I'd never salt before tasting.
I would agree with you, Jackdaw, as to most mayos.....but make your own and it's not hard and it's delish as it's so fresh, a Magimix makes it even simpler (other than washing the thing out!).
I got used to no salt at all when MrG was ill......and now I can taste even the slightest salt in food and dislike it......I do use herbs to season....
I am fascinated when, in restaurants, folk pour...not sprinkle, but pour..salt on food... that would make my toes curl now....x
+1 for homemade mayo...it's a world away from store bought. I do mine all-in-one with a stick blender...easy!
I mainly steam veg so don't use salt. I use salt in mash, and on roasts etc. Never have salt on the table...

I don't like the taste of raw salt.
My sister used to have a boyfriend who would pour loads of salt on his food. I think he got through an entire salt cellar in one meal.
