Dizzy Spells

My 12 year old grandson has had 3 odd turns over the last couple of days. Each time was when he stood up too fast after being sprawled on the sofa playing on his x-box. He falls over but doesn't black out. The nhs helpline nurse says very common in kids this age and nothing to worry about. Seems a bit of a slapdash response to me and I think the doc should take a look. Anyone else heard of this being "common"?

Low BP can cause such , usually in adults - worth getting him checked over, would do no harm.

Is he keeping well hydrated?

Yes it happened to my son when he'd had a growth spurt.

I think so Mamyalynne, usually got some plastic bottle attached to him. A few of his classmates are off with a bug and I wonder if that could be on the way.

Well it could be, give it a few days then see whether a check up may be in order.

I used to get the same symptoms when I was fourteen or so. It didn't help by going from 5'8" to 6'2" in a year. I looked like a stick insect :-)

Sounds like postural hypotension. It can affect people of all ages.

Make sure he always stays hydrated - particular in this weather.

It is quite common in young people. Used to happen to me and to my son. Happened when we got up too quickly. Worse in hot weather.

Yes he is taller than me and very stick insect like!! Thanks for all your responses, feel better about it now. I worry much more about grandkids than I ever did about mine when they were little!

If he's spending a long time staring at fast moving motion on the screen then he could easily get dizzy when he stands up and changes his focus.
