Its through the Halifax but they're stupendously poor at communication and have taken a phenonal 10 weeks so far to send the offer to my solicitor. Is this normal tactics??

Ive had a lot of dealings with the Halifax and don't have a problem with them.
If you are arranging through a financial adviser, it may be the advisor that is slowing things down. You should give the Halifax a call direct, the number I use is 08458 50 37 05 and they are usually very helpful.
There can be many complications in getting a mortgage as we all have individual circumstances, but there would be no reason for the adviser/lender to slow it down, as its a business transaction - they will want it sorted out quickly and compliantly.
There are 4 main areas that need to be checked:
Your ID - Name and Proof of Address
Your credit record
The property for security
Your income/Ability to repay
Find out whats causing the hold up and exactly what they need, (I know it sounds obvious, but sometimes you will get told income is required and not the details!)
I hope it works out for you soon :o)
