Quad bike question...

Does anyone know if it is illegal to ride one of these on public roads?

The person doing it does not hold a driving licence, if that helps.

Edit: Ok, i checked the other questions and it seems some are legal... (dammit!...irritating oik i would love to see get his just desserts!) But presumably a bike licence/insurance are a MUST...?

Quad bikes are generally for off road use - the road legal ones will be fitted with the appropriate equipment for road use but to use any mechanically propelled vehicle on the highway you must have licence/insurance/mot etc.. Report this character to the police and he will get his just deserts - better if you can arrange it so they actually get him 'on the job' so to speak. Good luck with your project.

Quad bikes can be ridden legaly on any road if they are road legal, ie taxed insured mot have all lights indicators etc and of course the rider has a licence and has passed his test.

The majority of quad bikes are not road legal.

With the person you are talking about.......Shop him!

Thanks W~M. As far as i know he has none of these things. He also drives his girlfriend's car but does not hold a 'car' driving licence, either. (Sorry, i know i must sound ignorant - i didn't even realise there were separate bike licences until this morning.)

If you really need something, think about this: he could plough into your car, or house. Worse still he could plough into you or one of your loved ones. If, as you suspect he has no licence, there is every chance he has no insurance either. (If the vehicle is not properly registered he will be unable to obtain insurance even if he wanted to). No insurance means no compensation will be forthcoming in the event of damage or injury.

Give the police the details and insist they deal with it before an accident occurs. Despite what some of them would like you to believe, it's what they are there for!

Hmmm... well i agree in theory JudgeJ, hence my original question, but the police have been called (not by me) to his house on several occasions in relation to other activities he gets up to... and bu99er all has happened!

'Insisting' they even acknowledge there is a problem is hard enough, to be honest.

Call them every time you see him. If his quad-bike is displaying no registration plates tell them that you absolutely sure an offence is being committed. Keep the details of every call you make. If the problem persists after half a dozen sitings visit your local nick and ask to see the duty inspector. It's all a bit of a chore, I know. But if you really want something done you must persist.
